Blindness Control Program

This program is functional in GB since 2000. Dr Niaz Ali Chief consultant Eye DHQ Hospital Skardu is working as the Provincial Coordinator and focal person for this program.

Under this program, 05 Comprehensive Eye care centers have been established in GB one each at PHQ Hospital Gilgit, DHQ Hospital Chilas, RHQ Hospital Skardu, DHQ Hospital Ghahkuch and DHQ Hospital Khaplu by providing state of art ophthalmic equipments and instruments.

Orientation Blindness Control Program

Objective

  • Under this program, till now 05 Doctors have done M.Sc/Mph in community eye Health from PGMI Peshawar scholarships.
  • Three Medical Officer have done DOMS from PGMI Peshawar.
  • More than 03 dozen Med- level eye care workers have been trained as Refractionist/Optometrist by arranging admission for students from GB at COAVS and KIOMS in BS vision science.
  • More than 03 dozen ophthalmic technicians have been trained from different institutions in Punjab, KPK and Sindh.
  • Free eye camps are being arranged at Gilgit, Chilas, Ghahkuch, Astore and Khaplu through this program. In these camps, thousands of patients suffering from Cataract blindness were operated by restoring their sights and thousands of patients were treated free of cost in OPDs.
  • Trachoma Intervention program is also being run in District Skardu to get rid of the most blinding disease after doing trachoma rapid assessment and trachoma prevalence surveys in all district of GB.
  • First time in history, Tissue transplant (Corneal transplant) was arranged at RHQ Skardu by importing Corneas from U.S.A through APNA and sights of 07 patients were restored.

Cataract support program has also been arranged in GB by providing  missing equipment /instruments as well as intraocular lenses and other consumable to restore eye sights of 3050 patients at PHQ AND RHQ Gilgit, RHQ Chilas, DHQ Ghizer and RHQ Skardu.
