SECRETARY HEALTH MESSAGE
Health is a basic fundamental right of all people. This principle underpins the development of all progressing societies. In Gilgit Baltistan (GB), the health department is struggling in providing the most essential services to its people and lags behind almost other provinces/ federating areas. It is imperative that this change. Various health system and cross sectoral issues plague the progress in health service delivery in GB. Within the health system, there is a severe shortage of skilled health workforce. While there is no dearth of talent, GB suffers from massive brain drain. Our young students are spread far and wide throughout the country, seeking medical, nursing and allied health education. However, on completing their education and specialized training they choose to relocate elsewhere in the country due to various reasons. It is important that stakeholders come up with practical solutions to address this serious challenge. Additional issues revolve around infrastructure development. GB does not have tertiary level care and people have to incur heavy expenditure to seek specialized health care from other provinces/ areas. Restructuring and strengthening of existing health infrastructure is also of grave importance to deliver services efficiently and effectively.
